Tea of the Day - December/31/2016

I figured this would be a good tea to end the year with, since it was a pleasant surprise.

I have a STUPID chronic sinus condition which flared up midway through December, and I've been feeling icky since.  So I wasn't feeling too great when I decided to try this tea, and to be honest a "citrus melon" (watermelon?) tea didn't sound too appealing.  But I gave the tea a chance anyway.

This is surprisingly good tea!  The taste, (to me, at least), has nothing to do with watermelon, which is a good thing.  (I think it would help the marketability of this tea to take the picture of the watermelon off the tin, but what do I know?)

I've written before of how difficult it is to evaluate tea, and since I was feeling less than prime, I expected my opinion of this tea to be bad.  If-and-when I ever begin to feel "normal" again, I'll have to sample some again, and see if my opinion of it has changed.

If you would like to give this tea a try, we have it in our store at, along with some other "Tea of Life" teas.

Tea of the Day - December/22/2016

This is another tea we bought through Harry & David.  We liked it so much that we added it to our store, here: .

This is the appearance of the tin we get from our supplier:

Regardless of how the tin looks, this is pretty darn good tea, as you would expect from The Republic of Tea.  It has nice cherry aromas and tastes, without being overpoweringly "fruity".  I could drink this tea everyday.

As a comparison, I sometimes crave a cup of Bigelow Raspberry Royale, but I do have to admit that it's strong flavor is better as an occasional treat rather than a daily staple.  Too much of its strong flavor would become tedious.

Try this tea sometime.  I think you'll be pleased with it.

Tea of the Day - December/18/2016

This is a very good tea, as you would expect from "The Republic of Tea".

We ordered ours through Harry & David; you can order yours through our tea store at this link: .

Behind the tea is a box of polvorones.  A polvoron is a type of snack or bakery desert that is popular in the Philippines.  Introduced during the Spanish occupation, it comes in bite sized pieces, and is good for satisfying the munchie urge without pigging out.

If you've never had a polvoron before, you can order some here: polvorones!

Tea of the Day - December/16/2016

I've given mixed reviews of other "Happy Elephant" teas, because I think they are a bit too weak.  However, those were black teas; this is a green tea, for which a less robust taste is expected.

But even given that qualification, I would still give good marks to this tea.  Why?  Because when I was having a nasty flare-up of my chronic sinus infection, this tea helped soothe my misery.

I'd love to say we sell it in our Tea Shop, but  -  alas!  -  the "Happy Elephant" brand is not one carried by our suppliers.

Tea of the Day - December/15/2016

This is an acceptable green tea, which, since it is a GREEN tea, is more impressive than it sounds.

Unfortunately our supplier doesn't carry it, so it's not available in our Tea Store, Tea-Universe.

Tea of the Day - December/12/2016

This is a really, really good tea sampler collection.  As you can see from the above pic, it includes 96 tea bags.  You get 12 different flavors of tea, 8 tea bags per flavor.

All the flavors are pretty decent, and some are very, very good, satisfying even our picky chief tea-taster.

We don't have this exact collection in our tea store, but we do have a comparable 120 tea bag collection here:

If nothing but the 96 tea bag collection will suffice, you can find it on Amazon:

Timothy's Variety 96 Sachet Sampler   - and -   Timothy's Tea - 96 Tea Bag Gift Set.

Highly recommended!

Tea of the Day - December/11/2016

First off, I need to say that today was our main tea-taster's birthday, so hold any criticisms or complaints until later, please.

Today's tea was a tea we reviewed first back in March of this year, namely, Brew-la-la Organic Spice Chai Tea:

Our opinion of this tea hasn't changed much.  Although some of us like it's lack of "bite", it's a little on the weak side for a chai tea, according to our primary taste tester, whose opinion should certainly be respected!

An Expert hard at Work

Be that as it may, we still sell this tea in our online store:  Brew-la-la Chai Tea.  It may be an ideal choice for someone who doesn't like a strong, bitter chai tea.  We all have different tastes and preferences!

Tea, (sorta), of the Day - December/10/2016

Today's "tea" isn't really a tea at all, but a so called "healthy energy drink".

I've been interested in energy drinks that are healthy for a while now, even adding a category of them to our Tea Universe aStore.  Check out them out if you're curious.  This particular brand is located here: Function Drinks Alternative Energy, Strawberry Guava, 16.9 oz.

The story behind this drink was this: we had been driving around Atlanta all day, winding up in Doraville at nightfall.  I needed a boost of sorts to make sure I stayed alert for the long drive back to Macon, so whilst shopping I had purchased a bottle of it, and drank it all before we got back on I-75.  (We had to run a few more errands downtown, and I-85 was a mess, so we puttered down Buford Highway to Lenox, if you're curious.)

It tastes okay: nothing spectacular, but not nasty like some other "natural and healthy" energy drinks do.  As for whether it works or not, I suppose it was okay.  I didn't get super groggy like I sometimes do after driving hour after hour after hour, and I didn't get a jittery caffeine rush either.  I think it's worth a try, if like me you're looking for an energy drink that won't harm you.

Here's what the PR for the product says:

"Too many energy drinks put you on a rollercoaster of too much rush, too much crash, and don't deliver the taste you're thirsting for. function: Alternative Energy gives you healthy, sustained energy for 6 to 8 hours, with no crash. The taste is clean, refreshing, delicious. Alternative Energy provides plant based stimulants including muira puama, catuaba, guarana and yerba mate. Each kicks in at a separate stage-when one is wearing off, another is just starting up. So you enjoy a smooth, strong, consistent energy boost that helps you make the most of your day."

The Insane Difficulty of Reviewing Tea!

Hey, this stuff tastes ....... uh, "different"!
Something odd recently happened.  If you've been paying attention, you will have noticed that my most current review of "Happy Elephant Chai Tea", (Nov/29/2016), differs considerably from an older review I made of the same tea, (Feb/28/2016).

What is going on here?

Well, giving me the benefit of the doubt and discounting the fact that I may be a senile, crazy old man, (hopefully not the case!), we have two possibilities:

1.  The tea was stored improperly, and in 9 months time many of the essential oils evaporated away, taking the flavor with them.  I find this unlikely, because of the tightly resealing container this tea comes in, but it could be possible, I suppose.

2.  We have just witnessed an extreme example of YMMV, (Your Milage May Vary), with respect to the desirability of a particular tea.  Given that tastes and preferences vary widely from individual to individual, perhaps it is not surprising that tastes and preferences may vary widely within the same person at different places and times?

In other words ....... whereas I thought "Happy Elephant Chai Tea" was good in February, by late November I considered it mediocre.

At this point, I too wonder why in February I thought it was "good"?  Does this look like a "good" tea to you?

Stringless, stuck-together teabags
The teabags lack a string and label, which I don't like, and are also stuck together in twosomes, which I really dislike.  (The ONLY brand of tea which packages its tea this way, and also IMHO has a quality product, is Celestial Seasonings.)

So I really don't understand my February review, other than to guess that at that time on that particular day I was in the mood for a very lightly spiced tea.  Who knows?

All of which just goes to show that the ONLY way to tell if you'll enjoy a particular brand of tea or not is to try it yourself, preferably more than once.

Tea of the Day - November/30/2016

This is an interesting flavored chai tea.  I'm not sure I'd like to drink it everyday, but as mid-winter drink twice a week or so it is very nice.

The taste is so unique I have a feeling that most folks will either love it or hate it.

We do offer this tea at our store: .

We also offer it bundled with Tazo Chai Vanilla Carmel:

Personally I would enjoy having the two flavors to alternate between, but if you just gotta have the pumpkin tea, then go for it!

Tea of the Day - November/29/2016

This is an interesting tea, in a disappointing kind of way.

I had bought it at a local discount store, (Tuesday Morning), and had hoped it would be as good as some other tea I had bought there.  Alas ...... the "happy" elephant is very weak, which is surprising for a chai tea.

Now as always, your tastes may differ from mine, and you may think this is the most delicious chai tea you have ever tasted.  However, I seriously doubt it.

Coincidentally we do NOT offer this tea in our online tea store, (, if you've forgotten), mainly because I can't find a source for it.  But I really don't think not stocking it is that much of a loss.

Tea of the Day - June/20/2016

Lady Lipton is, I suppose, Lipton's answer to Twining's Lady Grey tea, which itself is a milder version of their classic Earl Grey tea.

Be that as it may, is "the Lady" a good tea?  I think so, but it is a whole lot milder than regular Earl Grey.  While it does have a nice citrus taste to it, if you are expecting a full blown Earl Grey taste sensation, then you'll be disappointed.  (But in that case, why not just buy normal Earl Grey?)

I like this tea, but I would use it as an alternate, not one of my staple teas.  In other words, it's good, but not exceptional.

Tea of the Day - June/06/2016

A Glass of Basic Iced Tea

Not every cup, (or in this case, glass), of tea has to be some new exotic brew.  This was just a simple glass of unsweet iced tea, with some Sweet'N Low added to make it palatable.  You know what ..... it tasted great, and was a perfect compliment to the more fancy fare we had for brunch.  (At the wonderful Dovetail, in downtown Macon Georgia.)

Simple or complex, tea is great!

(P.S.  -  Yes, that is Lola in the background.)

Tea of the Day - May/27/2016

This is an interesting tea.  It was left in the break room where I work, with an attached note saying, "Tastes okay.  Smells like old beef broth with veggies."

I don't know what "Dong Quai" is, and whether it is good for you or not.  A Google search comes up with some interesting results, and Wikipedia says it is supposed to help high blood pressure, but I sure wouldn't stop taking my high blood pressure medication just because I drank some of this tea.

As for the tea itself, I don't really like it.  It left a metallic aftertaste in my mouth, which IMHO the alleged health benefits don't outweigh.

However, for you adventurous souls who like to dabble in herbal medicine we have several ways to buy this tea in our online store, (direct link here: ), including the two pictured below.

Tea of the Day - May/12/2016

This is a really good instant ginger tea.  Unfortunately our tea store, ( ), is out of it at the moment; the only places I know where to find it are some asian grocery stores in Atlanta.

We do have other varieties of Gold Kili Ginger Tea, but this one really, really rocks!

Worth the wait if we can get it back in stock!

Tea of the Day - Apr/25/2017

This is Mama's famous lemon grass and ginger tea, which is "good for what ails ya"!  It's coupled with some breadfruit, which has been sweetened with honey.

Breadfruit is an odd fruit, to say the least.  It doesn't have much taste, apparently has lots of carbohydrates, (for a fruit, that is), and as far as I know has to be cooked before you can eat it.  Mama says she used to eat a lot of it growing up in the Philippines.

Tea of the Day - Apr/07/2016

This is good tea, but in incredibly cruddy packaging.  Worth buying if you're willing to put up with that, or can move the tea bags into an empty tea tin.

If you can forgive the silly box and tea wrapper, you can buy this tea at our online store: .

Tea of the Day - Apr/05/2016

I was reluctant about this at first, because I wasn't too keen on "white tea", but I gotta say this is pretty good tea.

It's been added to our online store: .

Tea of the Day - Mar/16/2016

Homemade ginger and lemongrass tea.  Sweetie makes this for Grump, to help control his blood pressure.  (It's supposed to help with other things too, like inflammation.)

Sweetened with honey, it tastes great too!

Tea of the Day - Mar/12/2016

This is a nice, mellow chai tea.  It doesn't have as much "bite" as some other chai teas do, but I consider that a mostly good thing.  (Unless I'm having one of those mornings where I need a "slap in the face" to get going!)

Besides, who can resist a tea that comes in a tin with a pretty cartoon girl on one of the corners?

If you'd like to try this tea, we carry it in our store,

Tea of the Day - Mar/11/2016

When you just can't decide between black tea or green tea, oolong is a great compromise.  Whenever I drink it I'm reminded of the tea I usually get in Chinese restaurants.  Smoother than black tea but way more flavorful than green tea, I'm surprised oolong isn't more popular.

You can find this and other varieties of oolong tea in our store,

Tea Party

Yesterday we had a tea party!  The kids loved it!

(Okay, I admit some of them had hot cocoa instead of tea, but it's the thought that counts!)

Tea Shopping

Recently we went on a road trip to Columbus, Georgia.  While there we did a little shopping, and of course bought some tea!

I never could get a good pic of our bounty; these are probably the best of them:

So much tea to try, such little time!  And it's already beginning to warm up here in central Georgia.  The hot tea season will be ending soon, and before you know it we'll all be drinking iced tea to help repel the summer heat.

Kombucha One More Time!

Hibiscus kombucha oughtta be good for ya, right?

Kombucha again!

Grape flavored kombucha?  I know it sounds weird, but it's actually pretty good.

Tea of the Day - Mar/03/2016

Ginger Tea

A cup of deliciously spicy and sweet ginger tea.  Yummy!

I wish that we offered this tea at our store, (, but we don't.  A quick look at the packaging, and you'll realize that the best place to find this tea, (or something like it), is at your neighborhood oriental grocery store.

Tea of the Day - Feb/29/2016

This tea was given to me at work.  I'm not a huge fan of herbal tea, especially Lipton's, but this one is quite good.  It's milder than most hibiscus teas, which I find a good thing.

Also, let's give Lipton credit for the "pyramid" teabag, as the tea itself is chunkier than what you would find in a normal teabag.

To date I've largely avoided teas with a hibiscus base, but I may be changing my mind about that, as Wikipedia claims that hibiscus tea helps manage mild hypertension, which I've got.  If I could drink tea instead of taking pharmaceuticals and still keep my blood pressure down, that would be a wonderful thing!

I've added this tea to our store,

Tea of the Day - Feb/28/2016

A purchase from one of our shopping trips to a local discount store, this is a good chai tea, spicy without being overpoweringly so.

I'd like to say we now sell this tea in our store, but - alas! - our supplier doesn't carry it.

Friday, February 26, 2016

Tea of the Day - Feb/26/2016

Not all varieties of green tea from Lipton are good, (I think some of them are too bitter), but I like this one enough to add it to our store.

When I make a cup of tea, I fill my cup to nearly the top of the brim.  More yummy tea goodness for me to drink!

Tea of the Day - Feb/24/2016

A very good green tea, available at our store,

I've found that most varieties of "Earl Grey" tea tend to be tasty, so if you come across an "Earl Grey" flavored tea you've never tried before, it will probably be fine.

Tea of the Day - Feb/23/2016

This is a nice tea.  Unfortunately, like the Wellness Tea our supplier doesn't seem to carry it, so we can't offer it for sale in our shop,

Tea of the Day - Feb/19/2016

This is one of the teas we picked up shopping a few days ago:

It's really good.  So good, in fact, we added it to our store!  Highly recommended!

Here's an image of the back of the can:

Zhena's Gypsy Tea - Coconut Chai

This is a pretty good herbal tea.  It made a nice afternoon treat. Try it for something different!

Tea of the Day - Feb/18/2016

I drink kombucha mostly because I like the taste, and it does seem to help settle my chronic digestive disorders.  However, it's health benefits are controversial.  Wikipedia says this:

"Kombucha has been claimed to have various health benefits, but there is little evidence to support such claims. There are several documented cases of serious adverse effects, including fatalities, related to kombucha drinking, possibly arising from contamination during home preparation.  Since the mostly unclear benefits of kombucha drinking do not outweigh the known risks, it is not recommended for therapeutic use."

Haven't tried either of these guys yet, but I have high hopes that "Nighty Night" will help me sleep.
